Car hire in the South East

The South East still breathes of prehistory and the mysteries of the Iron Age, and the long course of human history . . .  Stonehenge sits there on its gentle mound and everyone wonders what its purpose was. Well, if you had only very big slabs of stone to make your garden sundial from, it'd probably end up largish, wouldn't it?

To tour the South East you can pick up a car at Heathrow, or Gatwick airport (or any of about thirty other places, really) and head dead South to Brighton on the coast.

From there you can get out your road Atlas, a book about the size of the New York Times, but with more accurate information, and take your pick of great sights to see.

Car hire in UK and more . . .

Summer is kindest to this country, but the locals, Norse and Saxon stock of old, are not stupid and love the fat life this rich and easy land provides.

So in winter you just go from warm pub to warm restaurant, feed to feed, and go home heavier, but well satisfied.

There's stacks to see, from Nelson's ship HMS Victory, to the Naval museum in Portsmouth and then the Normans' first castle at Hastings, and the whole 1066 thing, as well as the downs themselves, with their giant figures mysteriously graven into the chalk hillsides.

Click on the button, type in your date, place and duration of hire and we'll give you back a list of providers so you can choose the best deal. We call it "Quote and Pick" . . . and it works.

This system will provide you with the car and the cost that suits you best.

The links below will take you to our main South East of England car rental locations. Pick up and drop off details are on your booking confirmation . . .

Location Address

Brighton

Location Information

Brighton is a big, busy and almost perfectly preserved Georgian seaside town. You can pick up a car from your chosen rental provider without any problems, from there the rest of the the South and the borders are easily reached.

Location Address

Dover Eastern Docks

Completely chaotic arrival point for ferries from France and other parts of Europe. Be well prepared and call your renter on the number provided before trying to find your rental car. Referral to this excellent web site will prepare the first time visitor somewhat, http://www.topsy.demon.co.uk/dover/intro.html. The old town of Dover,on the other hand, and it's surrounding district is quite enjoyable. It should not to be confused with the mandatory chaos of an English transport facility, be it dockyard, airport, or railway station.

Location Information

Picking up a car at Dover should mean a quick fifty mile hop to London. Do not be fooled. Avoid this by heading south east towards Hastings. Take the coast road along the Folkestone beach front, keep going along the beach on the A259, and look for the signs for Rye. Once there, take the A268 North, you'll meet the A21 at Flimwell and after that "it's a doddle", as the English say. The alternative is as close to hell as a four hour traffic jam can make it.

The beach fronts of the South east, and a car to see them with

Londoners have always regarded the stretch of coast from Brighton round to Margate as "their beach". Foreigners may quietly wonder what charms there can be in rolling up your trousers to sit in a deck chair on a beach wholly composed of large river pebbles, but to the English, that's the beach.

If you are one of those show-offs who want to swim and prance about, then go to Margate; that slightly dingy grey stuff between the seawall and the water is sand, honest . . . and when the ebb goes out you'd better take a cut lunch to get to the water for your swim . . . and don't forget to start back in after twenty minutes or so, or the tide will take you to Spain.

After you've discovered the South East and it's attractions, it's just a matter of getting there. Anywhere that is, from Drake's old home of Devon, round to the South head of the Thames estuary.

But that won't be a problem if you use our revolutionary "Quote and Pick" system. Simply hit the button for a quote anywhere on these pages, then scan through the quotes from every one of our suppliers in any given area, and pick the best one for you.

We have pick up points all over the Ireland and the UK, and more coming on line all the time, so we've about got it covered.

It's great country this, with ancient iron age sites, Stonehenge and the standing stones, the mysterious chalk downs, old cathedral towns and of course, cider, great beers, scones you couldn't jump over and thick cream, sharp cheeses . . . it is a much blessed place . . . go on, click on the button, and get into it.
