This riverside town on the Thames
West of London is a new creation, being largely
the work of one Brian Duppa, a successful 17th century
brewer. He converted a straggle of houses and a
brewery on a track along the Thames to a bishopric
residence, and himself, of course, into a bishop.
The place has never looked back. It's a pleasant,
edge of London, suburban centre, and a good place
to pick up a car for touring the country. |

Where to pick up your car to see the rest of England
Using a car in London requires
the acquisition of special skills. The city has peculiarities
about fees for entry to certain areas, parking
regulations and a myriad other "wrinkles" you need to
be ready for. Greater London, with an area of
nearly 3000 square miles, is as big as a number
of European countries, and with population density at
more than 4000 to the mile it is far more crowded than
some, as well!
Driving, then is, as we
have said, is something of a special art form. That
being said, if you enjoy driving and want to take it
on, the English, from the man in the street down to
the Prime Minister, will give a newcomer a fair break,
and are staggeringly polite to those acting in obvious
ignorance.
The advantage of mastering
this arcane art will be the ability to shop, tour and
create your own itinerary, without being dependent
on public transport, or paying for taxis. A week of
taxi fares on a shopping trip in London will far outstrip
the cost of running and parking a rental car.
And, of course, if you already
have a car you can decide to leave the "big smoke"
at the drop of a hat, and head for the glories of the
English countryside . . . as long as it's not
a bank holiday weekend, when you should leave a day
earlier or a day later. Bank holiday weekends are
a great time to learn to drive in London, because there
is no one to run into. They are all sitting in a two
day traffic jam that stretches from just outside town,
near the dreaded M24 ring road, to every coastal resort
in Southern England.
This is an ancient and firmly
observed tradition, and well, just don't go there.
They all return to normal by the Tuesday after one of
these weekends and the country roads once again can
be used by simple folk from overseas.
Getting the best price for your
rental is important, as little extras can really
mount up and there are two of those pounds to every
American dollar, but that won't be a problem if you
use our revolutionary "Quote and Pick" system.
Simply hit the button for a quote anywhere on these
pages, then scan through the quotes from every one
of our suppliers in any given area, and pick the
best one for you.
We have pick up points all over the
Ireland and the UK, and more coming on
line all the time, so we've about got it covered.
Wonderful town this London,
with shopping,tailors and shoe makers
of legendary skill, theatres and great restaurants,
clubs and casinoes, and the historical layers of
an ancient way of life . . . go on, click on
the button, and get into it. |
